Kick-off
Kleine is 16 and has just got her driving licence. Her sister Emily and Emily’s friend Melanie have some advice for her. What do you think they are going to say? Write down your ideas, then listen to their conversation.
Melanie: So our friend Sarah was in a car accident about a year and a half ago, and something that I think like you should take from it, being a young driver – because she had just gotten her licence – is that you always have to be careful, especially at night and especially when it’s raining and you don’t know like what the conditions of the road are, especially cause she was on a big and winding road.
Ah … she wasn’t paying attention to how fast she was going and she went off the road and flipped her car. And … also, you need to pay attention to like, you always have to wear your seatbelt. Because … like if she wasn’t, you know, she might not be here today. Like she could have been projected from her car, just because that was what kept her in there.
Kleine: So did that make you guys wanna become a better driver and more cautious?
Melanie: Yeah, definitely. I think that after that happened like I definitely stopped using my phone as much because I was always one to be like “Oh, I have a text. Like I’m gonna check this”. And since I know she was texting right before that happened I kind of like … would … I think twice about -, before I pick up my phone.
Kleine: Yeah. So … so that really impacts you, right, cause you know her well and you wouldn’t want that to happen to you?
Melanie: Yeah, cause she was like my best friend at the time, and definitely I thought about like what if she wasn’t here today and that really like honestly our friendship has like grown so much like since that happened because I thought … I almost felt like I was taking her for granted and it’s like … In one instance like you could have someone like taken from you, and you have the power to do that when you’re driving.
Kleine: Uhum … So does she have her licence now?
Emily: Yeah, she does. Her parents wouldn’t let her drive for a while, but they got her a car and it’s like ts-, the number one safety pick, because, and they … uhm … ts-, limited her driving to s-, going to and from places at first. Now she’s kind of more open to what she wants to do, but she knows that she needs to stay safe.
