From 1825–1920 approx. 800,000 Norwegians emigrated to the USA. There are now about 5 million people in the USA of Norwegian heritage, and in some states you can still find Norwegian place names and family names. The Vesterheim museum and heritage center in Decorah aims to keep Norwegian-American culture alive. As well as looking at old buildings and historical objects, visitors can buy T-shirts and woollen jumpers, food imported from Norway and various art and crafts materials.
