War and peace

Zooming in

  1. Describe what you can see in the first picture.
  2. What do you think it is?
  3. How old do you think it is?

Write down your ideas. Then do the exercise in Zooming out.

Zooming out

  1. What is this flag in the second picture, and how old do you think it is?
  2. Where do you think it is hanging?
  3. What is in the book in the third picture?
  4. Where is the book being displayed?

Write down your ideas. Then have a look at The bigger picture.

The bigger picture

In many churches in the UK you will find a record of the names of local people who died during different wars. In some places you will also see old flags that were used in these wars.

A huge number of young soldiers died in the First World War. The end of that war is still marked in the UK on 11 November, which is known as Remembrance Day. On the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War there was a special exhibition at the Tower of London. It consisted of 888,246 red ceramic poppies spilling out of the Tower and colouring the ground red, like blood. Each poppy represented a soldier killed in the war. You can read more about this here.

Write a poem about war and remembering. Write the poem from one of these perspectives:

  1. a soldier who is in the middle of a war
  2. a son/daughter who has lost a parent during the war
