Kick-off
High school students have a prom at the end of the school year. Why is this an important event? Make notes on what you know, then watch Sydney and her mother talking about her prom.
Sidney: Um, today is our, my senior prom. This is my last dance at my school ever. And I … It’s a really big deal here. We have our own royalty. We have um … a king and queen at the end of the dance. And, yeah … What do you think about prom, mom?
Laura: Well, it’s a long time since I’ve been … to a prom.
Sidney: Yeah!
Laura: Um, things have changed, and I think they’re different regionally, but it is a big deal in America for … uhm … students to have a prom. It’s almost like a finishing, a celebration. Once they go through their four years of rigorous training through c-, through high school, and they prepare for college, this is like a celebration – a closing of one door and opening another. So … Prepping for it is a … an undertaking. Especially for the females.
Sidney: Especially for us.
Laura: You know, it’s the hair, it’s the nails, it’s the make-up and –
Sidney and Mom: – the dress!
Laura: The dress is the big thing. The, the date, you know, where they’re gonna eat dinner. Where they’re going to take pictures, just like we are here today. Uhm … but, it’s a, it’s a chance for her parents to show that they’re proud.
Sidney: Ah, you’re gonna cry?
Laura: I am gonna cry. I can’t take it anymore. You know, aach …
Sidney: I’m not leaving!
Laura: You are! I said I wasn’t gonna do this, but …
Sidney: Don’t cry, mom.
Laura: It’s a big deal.
Sidney: Yeah. I love you.
Laura: I love you too.
