How old do you think the houses in this street are? What are they made of? What makes them different from the houses where you live? Write down your ideas.
You’ve just got a message on your mobile. Your friend can’t find the shop you were talking about. Choose a building in the street in the picture, and write a text explaining where it is. Send this to a classmate.
This is one of the oldest streets in Norwich, England, dating back to the Middle Ages. Most of the houses were destroyed in a fire in 1507, but many that were rebuilt are still standing today. In the 20th century there were plans to demolish the buildings in Elm Hill, and build modern houses and a swimming pool. The authorities decided to restore the old buildings instead.
Should old buildings be demolished to make room for modern ones? Who should decide which buildings to keep? Are there any old buildings where you live? Discuss in a group.
